Elevated Design!?!

As Durham florist we love all things flowers but a great way to add dynamic design to your space can be elevated design! Why do I say elevated design instead of centerpieces or florals? Because you can get this dynamic feel without it having to be your centerpiece or even florals!

We have designed descending bulb candles over the head table at The Meadow of Raleigh earlier this year that gave a nice wow feel without the wow price. Some spaces would be overtaken by heavy greenery or florals overhead but there are so many creative options on how to best showcase your wedding and make it wowing!

Now don’t get me wrong! I love elevated florals and greenery and they can be PERFECTION! But that depends on you, on your vision on your venue.

Take this wedding I had at Cedar Groves Acres!

Talking Ceremony Design with Durham Florist

Hi! We are Poppy Belle Floral Design Durham Florists and I wanted to talk about wedding ceremony design.  As Durham florists we of course love flowers and more flowers!  But that is not the reason we suggest a design for your ceremony!

This wedding is all about your love.  All about your vows and this amazing ceremony starting your marriage. As such there is a focus and investment of décor to accent this focus.  To create romance and display the hard work and time of your vision.

As it should be, there will be so many pictures from your wedding that will be focused on your ceremony.  Your tears and smiles overtake your face in this life altering event.  If you have a ceremony design not only will you shine but your theme and design will shine!  You will have a cohesive story in your photos and those images will showcase your love, which is what brought us all together for this beautiful event, and your vision in a stunning way!

Imagine it…You are jittery, excited but also nervous… it’s time you are walking down the aisle towards your soon to be spouse… and around them are pops of all the hard work and ambiance of romance you have been cultivating this entire time.

There is an arbor with fresh and beautiful blooms arching over your spouse, the smell comes with the breeze as you walk towards them.

Wedding Favor Ideas from Forever Wedding Favors

To favor or not to favor, that is the question. As a wedding planner, I had this discussion with every client. The answer is simple: Your guests clearly care for you, because they will spend a lot of time and money to attend your wedding. It’s a nice gesture to give them a small token of your appreciation.

So I’ve discovered a great website where you can find personalized and uber cute favors! And the best part is that they’re useful! (Ever get a packet of birdseed as a favor? What the…what?!) Your guests are sure to love them. So hurry across cyberspace to check out Forever Wedding Favors! They have favors by color, by theme, by season, by style… They thought of everything!

Pictured below are some faves that I’ve actually gotten to try out!

raleigh-wedding-favors

  • LOVE magnets – They’re designed to look like typewriter ribbon, so are perfect for a vintage themed wedding! Who doesn’t have kids’ artwork, business cards, and reminder notes stuck to their fridge? We ALL do, so these magnets come in super handy.
  • Wine bottle stopper – In the shape of a heart, of course! If your guests love their wine, this is a perfect favor. You can never have too many adorable and stylish wine bottle stoppers! (They also have corkscrews to open the wine!)
  • Bottle opener – Prefer beer? No problem, you can also get a variety of bottle openers.
  • Cards – Do you and your sweetie love playing cards? The “All in” deck of cards reflect this hobby! And they provide a fun social activity for your guests, even during the wedding! (Yes, I’ve had couples play games during the reception! Fun!)
  • Salt & pepper shakers – These win the award for “Cutest Favor”! Those two little bears hugging? Yeah, they hold salt & pepper. You can’t help but say “Ahhhh” when you look at them!

There are way too many adorable options on their website, so be sure to check them out. You’ll definitely find something perfect!

P.S. I wouldn’t be a floral designer, if I didn’t highly recommend their floral suite of products. I didn’t get any, but I’m sure they are beautiful!

How to Make the Most of Your Wedding Flower Budget – Tips from a Durham Wedding Florist

Every bride has a vision of her wedding day flowers. Because let’s face it, blooms are THE focal point of your decor! But every bride is also on a budget, big or small, there is a number that is comfortable for the couple to pay. Sometimes that means that priorities need to be set. And your floral designer, like those of us here at Knots ‘N Such, Durham wedding florists, can help you determine those priorities. Here are some thoughts to consider as you prepare for a consultation with your fave designer, a small list of the areas we think are most important…

  • Bridal Bouquet – This is where it all starts. I always have my clients show me their fave inspiration image of a bouquet and ask them what they like about it. And then, every other floral element of the wedding stems from this – types of blooms, textures, amount of greenery, shape, etc. SO definitely make this floral piece the star of the evening!
  • Ceremony – This one is actually debatable, only because there are some venues (think Duke Chapel) that are so ornate and awe inspiring that flowers aren’t technically required. It feels blasphemous to say that, but it’s true! However, there are going to be a million photos taken of your “altar” space, so make sure it’s gorgeous! And the best way to do that is through the use of blooms!
  • Sweetheart or Head Table – Where ever the bride and groom are is where the camera is pointed, right? So, the sweetheart or or head table needs to be special. If you do non-floral centerpieces on every other table, fine, but do this one right!

There are so many other options for adding blooms but these are the core items that need to be special. And you’ve probably figured out why I think this by now – the most heavily photographed parts of your wedding day need to be stunning. The flowers live on forever in your photos. Your great great great grandkids will see them one day and marvel over your decor!

So let us help you design your wedding day! We specialize in making your dreams a reality. We also help you uncover dreams you never knew you had! Call or email us today for a consultation!

Summer Wedding: 9 Ways to Beat the Heat, Tips from Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist

Feature Image by J.P. Lord Photography. Knots ‘N Such, Raleigh Wedding Planner and Florist.

Guess what? It’s summer. And in case you haven’t stepped outside in the past few weeks (lucky you), in the Raleigh world that means it’s HOT, complete with that sticky, walking-through-water feel that only a North Carolina summer can bring.  Just wait until you step into all five layers of that gorgeous princess ball gown of a wedding dress!

Everyone loves summer weddings, including me, but in the heat of summer, doing anything outside can be tough and outdoor weddings that much more so. Here are a few things to think about to beat the heat on your big day.

Outdoor Ceremony Entrance

Photography by J Parker Photography

  1. Avoid the heat

This one sounds obvious, but sometimes it’s an easy one to forget. If you know you’re going to get married on a hot day (read any time June thru August), try going for a later or earlier ceremony time to avoid the heat of the day. You may not be able to escape the temperatures for the whole event, but this way you at least won’t have guests sitting for the ceremony, baking in the hot sun at its peak.

  1. Attire

Especially with an outdoor ceremony, take extra time to consider what your wedding party will wear on the day of. Trade the full tux and jacket for a nice vest, bowtie, or suspenders to class up the guys’ outfits without adding undo layers. For the wedding dress, try to pick something light and loose.

  1. Hydrate!

I can’t stress this one enough. Especially if you’re wearing a traditional wedding dress, you are going to be hot, hot, hot. Both you and your new hubby will be up on your feet, bouncing from friend to family member and back again. It will be all you can do to get a bite to eat (a pet peeve of mine—please be sure to get food!), but in hot weather definitely do NOT skimp on water. And don’t pass on water right to the beer. Trust me, you’ll regret it later. This goes for your guests, as well. You know how much quicker a cold beer or glass of wine can go to your head on a hot day. Make sure to have cool, non-alcoholic drinks available—and some cocktail hour snacks wouldn’t hurt, either.

  1. Flowers

Your blooms won’t like the heat any more than you do—and they also need to hydrate. As soon as you can after the ceremony, plop those bouquets in a glass of water. Your florist should take care of the centerpieces or other floral pieces, but just in case have your planner keep on eye on them to maybe top them off with water before dinner if they begin to wilt. (Bonus if your coordinator is also your florist!) What flowers you choose can help save the day, as well.  In-season blooms that don’t have to travel far will last longer, and the hardier summer varieties will stand up to the warmth better than more fragile ones.

  1. Cake or other desserts

Icing also doesn’t hold up well in the heat. While the sweet treats will taste just as delicious with dripping frosting as not, they won’t make for the best pictures, and you’re bound to get extremely sticky if you go for a cake cutting. Have your baker deliver during cocktail hour, so the cake doesn’t stay out long before the cake cutting. You may even want to cut the cake before dinner, so the cake is at its freshest for the pictures.  And then guests don’t have to wait long for dessert.

  1. Protecting guests

If you plan on spending most of the day in the sun, help guests prepare! Have sunscreen available—in cute little baskets or bins—somewhere near the entrance so they can lather up when they get there. If you plan on using metal chairs for the ceremony, invest in covers so no one burns her bottom. Also try to scope out or create shady areas for people to escape, especially during the cocktail hour.

  1. Indoor options

Remember the heat takes the biggest toll on the old and the young. If you have grandparents making the trip, make sure there is somewhere for them to go sit and cool off. If there’s an indoor element to the venue—even if not big enough for the entire party—think about making it available for those who really need it. The same goes for small children.

  1. Think waterpark!

Maybe not quite that extreme, but if temperatures are really getting up there, it might not be a bad idea to get some fans and misters to go on the tent. I heard of a bride who had a fan underneath the head table to blow under her skirt and help her cool off! Or go with the amusement park theme and get everyone those little squirt bottle fans as favors. If the venue has a hose, hook a fan up to the water source and create your own cooling station. Any way that you have to help your guests cool off will go a long way.

  1. Have some fun

Use the heat as a way to introduce some more casual aspects to your wedding. Give your programs a second purpose by having them printed as fans, so your guests can fan themselves during the ceremony.  Have a late-night snack of popsicles (Lunapops, anyone?), and have frozen drinks at the bar.  Ask your caterer to be sure and bring double the amount of water so you don’t run out.

Take it from your Raleigh wedding planner, if you have an outdoor wedding in June, July, or August, your chances of having excessive heat are great.  So plan to pamper yourself and your guests to beat the heat!  Be creative, have fun, and stay safe!

XOXO,

Amy
